Okay, so all of Tracy's weighing herself drove me to find a scale around the house.
131.9
Funny. I feel fatter than ever, I feel more out of shape than ever, but I'm still about 3 lbs. under my normal weight. And I was wearing jeans and a sweatshirt.
Wait.
129.5 buck-naked. Bam.
I guess fat does weigh less than muscle. Although I've always had this previously-unspoken goal weight of 120 (which is what my driver's license reads).
We'll see what happens. I've not been holding up the gym part of my New Year's resolution because my eye infection (started 1/6) has prevented me from wearing contacts. Can't run in my glasses - they're a 2-year-old prescription, and I will most certainly barf from the dizziness of bouncing up and down on a treadmill. I have a follow-up this Thursday, and hopefully I'll get the all clear to go back to contacts.
Meanwhile, most of the fun is still here. |

I'm posting a lot more regularly at the food blog, and am incorporating more of my daily life stories there, so I invite you to take a look. I feel that keeping two blogs will be redundant, so I don't think I'll post here very often unless it's a story that can't be told around a meal. :) |

| maybe this year will be better than the last |

| [ | Current Music |
| | "Auld Lang Syne" Guy Lombardo | ] | Our friend Rob sent out an email that listed the things he was grateful for in 2008, and it made me think upon this last year with almost a bit of regret. I don't think I did anything that I'm particularly proud/excited about other than being lucky enough to have the usual - love, family, friendship, food. I mean, not that any of these things are to be taken lightly, of course, and I AM grateful for all those things, but I just don't feel this year was very eventful.
I know I've used this title before, but I'm really hoping it's true this time around.
If you'll bear with me, I'm going to go through my iCal now and see if I can scrounge up an exciting recap for this year. I probably should have thought of this list before going back east for Christmas, since it's not very social to answer "just work" every time someone asks you what you've been up to.
- January 1st: Drove KP and the band back from an amazing NYE performance in San Francisco. This year, she performed on Carson Daly's NYE countdown and commanded $200 tickets for a massive LA party. Not that I can take credit for that, but it makes me proud.
- March 7th: Spent an amazing weekend in Santa Barbara as a treat to myself and Matty after his first tour of the year. That place is magical - we stayed in a fabulous hotel, found an amazing restaurant off the beaten path, and got amazing massages.
- April 29th: Saw Mudcrutch at the Troubadour. Tom Petty in a 500-capacity club is beyond words.
- May 24th: Discovered Palate Food + Wine with our dearest foodie friends, Jeff and Marcela. Notwithstanding the recession (personal or national), we'd be there every weekend if we could.
- June 30th: My first vacation in about 2 years, I think. Where else - the River. An entire week of floating in the river, eating Deb's food capped off by two nights of music from some of our closest friends.
- August 2nd: The Underwear Affair. Discovered and teared up over the generosity of friends and family as I did my first 10K to raise money for cancers below the waist, mostly for my aunt who was diagnosed with colon cancer this year. That part I could have done without this year.
- August 29th: Spent my first weekend on a tour bus as I met up with Matty on the TP tour.
- September 23rd: Fell in love with the Fleet Foxes after seeing them live at the El Rey. Favorite-Band-That-I-Don't-Work-With 2008, for sure.
- all year: Finished booking a year of Wednesdays at Room5. There were some great nights, and there were some real shitty nights. But it was amazing to discover new talent and work alongside Matty doing sound again, like we did when our love was blossoming.
- Matty: Did a lot of touring this year. I wasn't always thrilled about being alone, but it makes me so happy that he gets to do what he loves for a living. I bought him a vintage Ovation Magnum bass as an early 30th birthday present, and I hope he gets to use it lots this year, especially with Kingsize.
See what I mean? I'm not ungrateful for the great moments of 2008, but I don't feel like I've DONE anything. I don't know - I've been feeling very negative lately, and I feel like I need a major shake-up to get out of this rut, but nothing seems the right option yet. Safety blanket it is, and will continue to be until I find it.
Onward and onward. New Year's Resolutions 2009:
- Gym regularly. An oldie but a goodie. Pudge McFatty was lucky she was able to zip up her promised sequin dress for last night's NYE party. I'm thinking of signing up for the Underwear Affair again to keep myself motivated. It's hard to get Matty to commit to it, though, as August is prime touring season.
- Take more pictures. I believe this was also on last year's list, but with the new camera Matty got me for Christmas, I'm hoping to actually follow through this year. Speaking of which, I should go work on crocheting a camera case for it since I'm still on East Coast time and
- Add more music to my life. I have a friend who is involved in loads of choirs that I need to hit up for involvement. I miss singing. I never went through with last year's resolution to practice guitar or violin.. However, I did get a make-your-own-ukulele kit for Christmas, so I think I'll pretend to work on that for a while (read: at least until I go back to work on the 5th).
Well, off to do the dishes from last night's party, crochet a camera case for aforementioned new camera (because camera cases cost money and scrap yarn is free), and then order wings to head to Paul's Rose Bowl party. Bah humbug, 2009. Hope you surprise me.

Depressing news to report. I went to Old Navy to try to find replacement jeans because my current favorite pair has developed an unfortunate hole. Last time I was at Old Navy, the miracle of miracles occurred, and I was able to immediately find a pair of size 6-short skinny jeans that were absolutely perfect.
Today: no zippy on the size 6-y. And the 8's made me look tragic. So I went back to the office and ate two cookies our tech guys had sent over.
Sounds about par for the course.
I think I'll just move into a pair of American Apparel leggings and wait out winter. |

My, oh my. We finally finished the turkey leftovers last night. There is still a load of frozen gnocchi in the freezer, a small amount of mashed potatoes (which may go into some stuffed peppers tonight), and lots of panzanella. I don't think anyone liked the panzanella. That's what I get for not auditioning it before the big day.
There's still lots of pie left, but I brought in the equivalent of one whole one to the office, so hopefully that will help. Matty and I have been religiously eating dessert during "The Office" every night this weekend. Add on to that the bourbon pumpkin cheesecake that no one in my family liked (but we think they're crazy), and we've have many sweet nights to come.
Thanksgiving was amazing. We got a very late start to dinner because Matty found a hole in the bottom of the smoker's water bowl. It was all worth the wait, though - food was excellent, if I do say so myself. We ended up taking turns lounging on the couch, and had the house back to ourselves around midnight. Nothing like ending Thanksgiving dinner with a glass or two of port and Justin's "Single Ladies" sketch on SNL.
Went over to the parents' Saturday afternoon for Thanksgiving Dinner #2. Thankfully, it had nothing to do with turkey. Matty dropped me off on campus for the game, and then post-game, we headed over to Carson's co-ed bachelor party.
I did as close to nothing on Sunday as possible. Unfortunately, Matty had to work all day so I amused myself by crocheting, running to Michael's to get more yarn, and then crocheting for the rest of the day. Ended up with a belated birthday present for Katy and a hat that's going to be a Christmas present for one of my great-aunts. They seem to like the hats I made for them two years ago, so these will be refresher hats.
Yesterday was pretty rough. Started off the day by falling off the exercise ball I sit on at work. Awesome. I think I needed a half day just to get back from all the nothing I did this weekend.
I think it'll be a quiet week for us, but crazy busy this weekend with USC/UCLA, Nash @ Hotel, ROunion happenings and Weepies @ Hotel. Gotta rest up for the excitement! :) |

Dear God. I've been meaning to update.
I'm excited about my Thanksgiving Eve benefit at Room5 tonight. Should be a good time. And I'm bribing people with pie. Mini buttermilk sweet potato pies, that is. And I only had the patience to make 21 mini pie crusts, so I had enough filling to make a 9-inch tart as well. Which left me out of flour so I had to grab some this morning on my way in to work.
This all brings the 2008 Thanksgiving menu to:
BRUNCH mini caramelized onion quiche pumpernickel toasts with smoked salmon tartare
MAIN COURSE bacon-wrapped smoked turkey smoked ham
SIDES andouille cornbread stuffing mushroom panzanella apple cider brussels sprouts sweet potato gnocchi ruby port cranberry sauce apple cider gravy
DESSERTS honey pumpkin pie pear ginger maple pie
buttermilk sweet potato tart I feel so fancy typing it all out. :P I love Thanksgiving so much. |

Hi strangers!
I've been way too boring to post. Literally, every day goes a little something like this:
wake up / skip gym work home watch "The Office"
"The Office" is awesome. I'm so glad I'm catching up via DVD because I'm not sure I could take waiting all summer for the next season. :)
I think I'm going to the gym tonight. I packed a bag and everything. Matty's got rehearsals, so he's not going to be home until later, so there's not really a reason for me to rush home. Maybe I'll try to find something cute for our anniversary dinner/show tomorrow night. I did stop by Wasteland on the way to Room5 last night and picked up a sweater/tunic that Matty calls "striped in all colors of the 80's," and I rather like it, but what's another shopping excursion. Every time payday rolls around I pretend I have money. :)
Speaking of money (or lack thereof), Christmas is right around the corner. I can't believe it. Let the meaningless shopping commence! |

Cranky Crankenstein checking in here.
Honestly, the list of things I'm looking forward to for the rest of this year can be counted on one hand:
10/30 Ray LaMontagne @ Wiltern 11/14 Ben Folds @ Wiltern / our 4th anniversary 11/27 Thanksgiving TBC: MCH Secret Santa 12/20 the day I fly the hell out of here to spend Xmas w/ D's P's (and at the rate things are going, I may never come back)

Had an absolutely glorious weekend.
Woke up early on Saturday to go to the office to connect a phoner. While I was doing that, Matty went to pick up 50 wings and an 18" cheese pizza so we could meet Jeff & Marcela at Brandon's to watch the Miami/FSU game. Except that Jeff & Marcela were no longer able to stop by. And Brandon's cable package wasn't showing the game. Balls.
So, the 3 of us downed the 50 wings as quickly as possible and then drove over to Barney's Beanery, where there was the largest Miami contingent I've ever seen in LA. It is absolutely fascinating to watch Matty get into football. I mean, we were screaming and yelling at the TV. In public. He IS the man of my dreams. :)
Unfortunately, the 'Canes lost, but I learned many things - the 'Canes spell-out (like ours, but easier :P), their mascot is an ibis (I guessed stork), named Sebastian, and their dance team (the Sunsations) is totally different from their cheer squad. :P
After the game, we went back to Brandon's to change into our wedding finest. That took a little longer than expected, and their wedding venue was a little farther than we expected, so we were a little late, but thankfully, nothing had started yet.
It was a beautiful ceremony, Kawika delivered a memorable speech (when doesn't he?), Kali's dress was beautiful, and Kim and I sat and cried through the whole thing. Had a lovely time at dinner, and danced like a crazy person even though Matty wouldn't join me on the dance floor.
Fell fast asleep the moment we got home. Here are the few photos I managed to take (since we were late, we forgot the camera in the car for the ceremony portion).
Started off Sunday with a lovely ROunion brunch at Home Restaurant, followed by vintage/costume shopping. Matty's going to be a magician, so I'm going to be his rabbit. My costume involves a $5 packet of ears/bowtie/tail and will end up at least also including a leotard from American Apparel. I think I'm going to Jet Rag and rummage through their dollar pile to find an old long-sleeved collared shirt and cut off the cuffs to wear, proper Bunny style. I would also like to find a way to fashion a top hat about my waist - you know, so I look like a bunny coming out of a hat. If any of you crafty types have ideas, I'm all ears. (No pun intended). |

| [ | Current Music |
| | "Bleeding Love" Leona Lewis | ] | I am in such a terrible mood. I don't want to talk about it. I'd like to focus on what I'm making for dinner.
When we discovered that we actually have a night to ourselves tonight and would be eating in, Matty jokingly said he wanted fried asparagus, spinach and halibut. So here's the riff:
Steamed Cod w/ Coconut Chutney Asparagus Tempura Spinach Pancakes
This is counter-productive to the other thing I'm trying to focus on - fitting in gym time between now and Jason + Kali's wedding. Especially since it looks like both SC and the Cowboys seem to be headed for epic seasons, and I'll be watching many of the games in public, where wings and beer are readily available.

Please hurry, sweet Saturday. |

I cannot stop eating today! At the beginning of the week, I'll generally pick up a couple lunches from Trader Joe's and keep them in the fridge at work. I think I blew through everything I had just today. A Havana wrap in the morning, some tofu spring rolls for a late lunch, and I just couldn't wait the 2 hours to start grilling for Monday Night Football, that I threw back a spicy Thai pasta salad.
Speaking of grilling, I think I need to cut back my meat intake. I had burgers 3 times last week. I'm thinking making myself a nice portobello "pizza" on the grill with some Brie and avocado.
See? Hungry again!

As promised, here are photos of my Olympic crochet work. Two baby blankets (one going to a neonatal ICU near you, and one going to the first friend who has a baby girl), and a scarf (made of the finest yarn known to humans. I have one ruffled arm warmer crocheted in Malabrigo Cognac, but I need more to make the second. Waiting for a sale (or a generous friend :P).

| | anxious | ] | Finally. A busy week where I won't be plopped in front of the TV watching the Olympics and crocheting until I go cross-eyed. I really do enjoy doing things in spurts. I'll post pictures soon of what I've been cranking out.
Monday: Mandi's birthday get-together Tuesday: dinner w/ JTG Wednesday: Room5 Thursday: laundry Friday: fly out to see Matty and be on the bus through Vegas, Reno and SF!
I can't believe it's been a month since he's been gone. In some ways, it feels unbearably long, but at the same time, the days have certainly been marching along. After I see him this weekend, it'll only be two more weeks until he's home.
I do have a case of the Mondays, though. I couldn't sleep, so I thought I'd wake up early to run errands, but now I'll be lucky if I have time to get gas. Stupid Internet. |

Ugh. Hurry, weekend. |

[Aug. 12th, 2008|09:27 pm] |
I'm back on a crocheting kick. I've made a little purse that needs to be felted, and I've made a ruffly scarf. Now I have to find a place to stash all of these and try to distribute them come holiday time.
It's kind of been my way of dealing with being stressed out and not having my normal venting partner here. That and Michael Phelps. Kinda makes me wanna go to the gym. Unfortunately, I'm up until 1a every night to watch these games which makes it very difficult to get up early enough to do anything other than roll out of bed and shower.
You know what's annoying about the Games, though? These McCain ads. I mean, really, sir? |

I am so cranky. I wanted to go to yoga today, but I left the office too late to make it to class. So I decided I'd go shopping. And couldn't find anything. (And Matty pointed out that blazer I wanted yesterday is now sold out). So I'm even crankier.
I was going to cook (mac and cheese - the anti-crank). But I spent the better part of the evening trying to shoo flies out of my kitchen. Don't know how they even got in since the house is shut all day. And when I was done with that (read: gave up), my work email wouldn't let me on so I spent near an hour trying to write an email that should have taken 5 minutes).
After the planned gorging, I was going to watch "Enchanted," which just showed up via Netflix. But now, it's too late, and I need to go to bed if I'm going to make it to the gym tomorrow. Which I've skipped all week by lying to myself that I'm still sore from the 10k.
Thank the dear heavens that Tim is taking me to see Eddie Izzard tomorrow night. And Greg and I have a football date Saturday to kick off the pre-season. Wings and Tony Romo are the only things getting me through this week. |
